Iguanas

The world is a glazed clay pot containing two iguanas.

Everything occurring on Earth hinges on the interaction of these two: the male and female iguanas. Their eyes are wide open, inquisitive, aware; their claws are extended and their tails are curled. He is the larger and more broken of the two. She is the more self-possessed. They pivot around one another, observing, posturing, balancing. All the world’s activity depends upon their dance. He spins and says, “Some states have laws against the way you move.” She pirouettes and answers, “Don’t talk rot.”

Tomorrow will be something else, a new means of expression, another symbol, a different metaphor. But today the whole of the world is a glazed clay pot containing the dance of two iguanas.
