It didn't like that I wanted a three character username. I tried persistence, to no avail. So I added two characters "Jimfo." It passed that through, or so the scripts made me believe. I never got a confirmation email. Maybe BBPress knows that I have a history of signing up in forums and never posting a damned thing. Who said the internet is dumb?
